NEWBIE ADVICE

This section will be have some basic advice for new trainers who are just about to start or not sure what to do with their horses. Most Likely I will fire a couple of links here as others have better advice than me!!

Probably best to choose ladbrokesraceclubs when you start as the general opinion is that they are the most reliable of the 3rd party providers. There were always complaints about Getminted before they got the ‘boot’ so if possible sign in through them. Make sure you get the best sign up deal too, make use of those bonus credits.

Once signed up print off and read the newbie guide. Most of it is basic but still needs a read.

Colts or Fillies? Buy Fillies when you are starting out and if operating on a low budget. The Fields are smaller & you save £2.50 on every horse thus making it the more profitable option. Most trainers buy colts which makes for a tougher arena but with bigger rewards when you do get a good one.

Most important step now and something you must do is SOURCE A TT GUIDE. Ask most experienced owners and they will forward you one. Be careful though, a lot of trainers even some experienced ones have set the TT standards of horses far too high.

Training – My typical starting cycle would start like this:

  1. 1400 England Good
  2. 2200 England Good
  3. 2850 England Good

Using the general rule that ½ Length per 200m you can work out wether it’s a sprinter, classic or stayer horse. If for example it looked like a classic, next four runs should be 1600, 1800, 2200 & 2400 which should give decent indication. Next train over each ground condition on the same track then training over both dirt conditions. By now you have a good idea on distance and going. Now you can either race you horse if your impatient but its best to flip and go again.

This time do distance again so your sure maybe 2200, 1800 twice then 2200 again. This will give you three comparisons between 1800 & 2200. Now do two cycles on going reversing the cycle e.g- G/S/F/Y/Fa/Mu then do Mu/Fa/Y/F/S/G. You now use the last couple of trials to isolate your top two conditions and you should now have a pretty good idea what your horse likes.

Age Change

The general rule of thumb for age changes is to add 12.5% of your horses top TT for a decent age change. This means a horse doing 18 lengths at 2 needs to be doing 20.25 @ 3 to maintain its position.

Second places are what you aim for – fact. With the exception of the top class horses the most profitable way to run your horse is by keeping wins low for as long as possible. Its important to make sure that when your horse wins it’s the maximum that your horse is capable off. e money at this game you need to overturn the 15% house rake. If you are winning, it means a lot of people are losing. Don’t look for excuses, look for areas you can improve on.
