Well, here goes my first blog on my first website. Now like a true grumpy old man I could go on and on about how life's a bitch and everything is against you but let's try and stick to a topic..today's is the race programmer.
Otherwise known as the RP, the race programmer gets a fair bit of stick for pretty much everything he does. In my opinion he's getting off lightly!! Seriously, either he or she is completely stupid or they do the programme as a part time job spending too little time on it. It is littered with mistakes that given time an eight year old child would not make. I'm not exaggerating - its a definate.
I know its awkward for raceclubs to do something about it, like most workplaces they are probably mates and nobody likes to diss their mates but c'mon... the main pinnacle in a virtual racing season is the challenge finals. Good prizemoney, the best v the best & the chance to impress everyone else with how well you've handled your horse all season. What does the RP do..he'll schedule the top races of the day on at 11:45pm and sometimes as late as 1am - wow, the site is pretty much all British with some Europeans and nobody gets to watch the top races.
Every season, the same people point out the same mistakes on the programme because he uses the same darn template and doesn't update the thing. All season long we will have 2 yr old filly progress races at 6:05pm followed by 2 yr old Filly progress races at 6:08pm then 2 weeks until the next 2 yr old filly progress race. How hard is it to spot the same darn races right bloody next to eachother!!
In December 07 i said to the RP that next season he needs to make sure that the 4 monthly challenge series races cater for Sprinters, classic and Stayers with the 30 qualifiers spread out across all distances. I know what your thinking..30races/9distances means 3 races each plus a few over the more common distances.....errrrr - wrong....to the RP that meant having 4 finals all for classic horses 1600, 1800 & two 2200 finals with qualifiers spread from 1400 - 3200..how many frigging 3200 horses are good 2200 horses..i'll tell you, its none you half wit.
Where did the 1000 & 1200 distances go??? Why not have a sprinter, stayer and classic final - you have 4 to play with. Is it too bloody hard to distribute 30+ races including 4 finals fairly...evidently, for our fabulous RP it is.....the plonker.
